Samus Aran Is Hot
Fellow gamers,
I great enjoyed this. Hopefully you will too. I wish I had those kinds of skills...
The beginning: If Halo was actually anything like that, I would be all over it. As it stands....not so much.
The middle: We all know who was going to win that.
The end: Loltastic.

I really wish a game could capture those hugely mobile, awesomely choreographed (but not) kind of fights you would find in The Matrix or Dragon Ball Z. Something like a cross between Ninja Gaiden and Spiderman 2, with huge but intricate environments, tons of crap to throw around and bounce off of at high speeds, and a massive array of ass kicking moves. Next gen, I'm looking at you.

This is some postmodern jazz, what with pretty much everything being taken from somewhere else and being arranged in a ridiculously over-the-top fashion.
One of the problems I see about awesome "choreographed" fights in huge environments is that of player input. In order for it to flow well and look cool, you'd either need to know lots of complicated inputs in advance or make them all so simple that they'd be almost meaningless (like the reaction events in RE4).
But I suppose DMC shows that if you put the work in to know what you'd like to do beforehand it can come off looking AWESOME.
Camera and input would be the the biggest hurdles, I think. Reaction commands are out (though I would liken them more to God of War than RE4, as the latter's are never that involved acrobatically). I think it would have to be a heavily contextual system, similar to what Assassin's creed might accomplish, where moves are not specifically designated but rather flow naturally from each situation. For instance a grab button to grab enemies, weapons, objects, parts of the environment etc. Use a lock on or other aiming system to determine what is grabbed and have the same button for throw. Maybe have a timed hold to determine power. That would open up a ton of options with just one button. Start combining it with similarly versatile buttons and awesome combos start to emerge. Grab a guy, then fire to pull off that point blank shotgun move seen in the video. Knock an enemy down then grab his weapon as it flies through the air and start shooting. Grenade a vehicle then jump into the air after it, grab it and throw it at a new wave of enemies. The possibilities should be limited only by the player's imagination and reflexes.
Dammit, the more I think about it, the more I want to make it.
Close range combat could be handled like DMC, with different moves based on the timings of the presses, the direction of the control stick, and the weapon equipped. Each, gun, sword, motrocycle, emptyhanded, or other random object could have its own set of combos. Different moves could be used for damage or knockback.
One on one and huge hordes would be viable. Dare I say versus? Co-op?
Mulitple playable characters? Samus's grapple beam would provide some very different mechanics from normal grabs, not to mention the mobility show in the movie.
Not to say Samus and MC should be used.....maybe the grapple beam could be an item? Or have RPG elements where you can upgrade your stuff and choose what to bring into battle, kind of like Hitman.
Oh man, imagine battling on a huge armada of of air ships, jumping between them and hurling enemies into oblivion.
I am way too into this
Just to get write this down
Jump
Grab/Throw
Melee
"Trickster"
Fire
Weapons switch
Lock-on
More to come?
Trickster, you say?
If Trickster had Zero Shift instead of Air Trick it'd be superwin.
Every action game needs more zero shift.
Speaking of the Metroid Franchise...
Why does Nintendo always seem to delay their major games? If Twilight Princess was slated for 2006 originally, I could see them holding it off for the Wii, but not after 2 years or so in production. Prime 3 was supposed to be here in March. If its not this summer, then my Wii will have no games at all until Brawl comes out (I hope) this Fall. And while I am at it, where is Metroid 5 for the DS? I still want to know what happens to Samus after her encounter with the X...
Delays are temporary. Mediocrity is forever
